Driving down the road of innovation
On the official Google blog David Drummond announces the company is ending its agreement with Yahoo! Here’s a snippet (emphasis mine)
We’re of course disappointed that this deal won’t be moving ahead. But we’re not going to let the prospect of a lengthy legal battle distract us from our core mission. That would be like trying to drive down the road of innovation with the parking brake on.
This has to be the best traffic inspired metaphor since “information superhighway”.
The analogy holds more generally. I’d say it pretty much sums up some aspects of software development, but I’m more of a cyclist than a car driver. Recently I’ve been working on one of Google’s specialisms — a novel application with a web interface — and at times it does feel like I’m cycling up the hill of innovation with a slow puncture. And a couple of broken spokes. Into a head wind.
